Face it, you have dust mites.

Dust Mites are everywhere, in every home.

They feed on little flakes of skin that we constantly shed. And then they poop all over the place.

Dust mites are really, really small - far smaller than the human eye can see - and their poop is even smaller. When you move around your house or clean up, tiny particles are floated into the air. Because these particles are so small, they’re easily inhaled deep into your lower lungs. Your body then begins to fight these little invading particles and forms antibodies that often will cause allergic reactions.

Some people don’t react negatively to dust mites, but for many exposure can cause sneezing, stuffiness, runny nose, itchy, watery eyes, and even asthma. Also, high levels of dust mite allergens cause Atopic Dermatitis – itchy, irritated skin. In fact, dust mites are responsible for an estimated 5 million doctor visits each year.

For those susceptible to these reactions, the experience is much like seasonal pollen allergies but it’s not seasonal. It’s all the time.

THERE’S ONLY ONE REAL SOLUTION.

While there are plenty of products and services out there that claim to solve your dust mite problems, ‘cleaning up’ works only temporarily. Dust mites are vigorous reproducers, and their population will bounce right back given the right living conditions.

But they have one serious weakness: dust mites can’t drink. You’d think that they’d have been designed with the ability to drink water, given that their bodies are over 70% water by weight, but unfortunately for them they weren’t. Instead, they absorb water right into their bodies from water trapped in the air… that is, from humid air.

Dust mites like it wet. In fact, studies have shown that they thrive when the relative humidity in your home is between 75% and 85%.2

But below 50% humidity dust mites dry up like dead leaves.3 And that’s the only way to beat dust mites… simply make sure your home isn’t a comfy environment for them.

Wet Basements = High Humidity

As we’ve mentioned on other parts of this site, wetness in your basement increases humidity throughout the home. As air from the basement moves into the living areas above, it brings with it the humid air and whatever else might be growing down there.

By the way, if you question our facts or think we’re raging green-freaks, please see the sources of our information for proof.

So, the first step to reducing interior humidity is to make sure you don’t have a source of dampness right inside. For 39 years, Waterproofing Inc. has been sealing basements new and old.. over 20 million sq. feet in all.

In some climates, sealing out water isn’t enough. Where necessary, Waterproofing Inc. will install a dehumidifier that’s perfectly matched to your home’s requirements.
