Viruses, pollen, smoke, and VOCs
Mold and dust mites aren’t the only thing polluting the air inside American homes.
The EPA warns that pet dander, pollen, viruses, second-hand smoke and VOCs have harmful effects on our health and even cause cancer, lung-disease, heart-disease and thousands of deaths each year.
We all know what pet dander, pollen, and viruses are. Pet Dander and pollen are the bane of allergy sufferers everywhere. In extreme cases, they can trigger dangerous asthma.
Viruses cause colds, flus and much more.
Second-hand smoke has been proven to be the cause of between 38,000 and 50,000 deaths each year in America alone. Every year, it’s also is responsible for 150,000-300,000 lower respiratory tract infections in children under 18 months in this country.
And VOCs are the fumes that waft into the air we breathe from the thousands of chemicals that fill our homes. Some of it is from the very materials our homes were built with: plywoods, paints, glues, lacquers, and wood finishes are all major sources of VOC pollution.
Then there’s the chemicals we bring in with us: household cleaners like dishwasher ’soap’, laundry detergent, dryer sheets, bathroom cleaners, mothballs, and more. Some of the worst offenders are aerosols like hairspray, air ‘fresheners’, and carpet cleaners.
Where do VOCs come from?
- Paints
- Varnishes
- Moth balls
- Solvents
- Gasoline
- Newspaper
- Cooking
- Cleaning Chemicals
- Vinyl floors
- Carpets
- Photocopying
|
- Upholstery Fabrics
- Adhesives
- Sealing Caulks
- Cosmetics
- Air Fresheners
- Fuel Oil
- Vehicle Exhaust
- Pressed wood furniture
- Environmental Tobacco Smoke (Second-hand smoke)

The health effects of VOC exposure
Short term exposure to VOCs is known to cause:
- Eye irritation / watering
- Nose irritation
- Throat irritation
- Headaches
- Nausea / Vomiting
- Dizziness
- Asthma exacerbation
While longer term exposure has been proven to cause
- Cancer
- Liver damage
- Kidney damage
- Central Nervous System damage
None of this is any good. If you’ve got indoor air pollution, it’s a good idea to consider cleaning it up.
Clean your air silently, 24/7.
The best way to get rid of ALL these issues - from pet dander to VOCs - is with a good air purification system.
There are many different ways to clean the air in your home, from stand-alone air oxidation units to whole house filtration systems and more.
The science of indoor air purification has come a long way in recent years. In fact, extremely popular ozone-producing systems, like Sharper Image’s Ionic Breeze, have recently been found to produce toxic levels of ozone in the home… as much as 10x the government’s safe exposure limit! (They sold 3.2 million units before going bankrupt due to lawsuits regarding their safety.)
Now, the most cutting edge systems combine several of the best and safest technologies into one unit. These include photo-oxidation (PCO) technologies, UV light purification, as well as very low-level ozone purification.
These systems are so efficient that they’re proven to clean 98% of viruses, bacteria, germs, odors, and chemical gases (VOCs) in the home, without the hassle of changing filters or cleaning blades or the annoying fan noises while you sleep.
